LA COUBRE LIGHTHOUSE
Located in La Tremblade, at the very north-end of the Gironde's Estuary, the La Coubre Lighthouse is undoubtedly a highlight of Charente-Maritime.
Built in 1904 and put into service in 1905, the lighthouse has overlooked the Gironde's Estuary ever since then.
It is rated as one of the highest lighthouse in the area and one of the most powerful in France.
The lighthouse acts as a guide through the ocean, illuminating the way to make sure sailors by the shore stay safe.
It warns mariners of dangerous sandbanks, which has caused the sinking of several ships.
If you're going through the beautiful "La Coubre" Forest, by car, walking or even by bike, you will certainly see the lighthouse stick out. Visiting the lighthouse is a necessary step to marvel at the path crossed and the unspoilt flora and fauna. With a truly breathtaking view from the balcony, it is the perfect location to discover the vaste estuary, where the Cordouan Lighthouse overlooks. With 300 steps, the lighthouse is 64 meters high. The paronamic view on Oleron Island, La Tremblade, La Palmyre, not forgetting the fine sandy beaches and the pine woods, allows you to experience nature in its purest.

Much more than only 300 steps, the visit continues with a museum which offers the opportunity to unveil the light-keeper's secrets, a gift shop with more than 400 products and a foodtruck.

A 25 km cycle path through the beautiful forest of La Coubre gives access to the beach and the lighthouse.
Situated on the itinerary of « La Vélodyssée », the lighthouse gives the cyclist an appropriate welcome with adapted equipment and services.
